LOCAL WILLIAM WINCHESTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENT RECEIVES SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE JIM & PATTY ROUSE FAMILY FOUNDATION AND THE WESTMINSTER BALLET THEATRE
Westminster, MD--August 7, 2007-- Danielle McAulay, a 7 year-old student at William Winchester Elementary School, has been awarded a one-year full dance scholarship to State of the Arts Dance & Music Center. The scholarship is part of a grant from the Jim & Patty Rouse Family Foundation for the Westminster Ballet Theatre’s Arts in Education Program. The Westminster Ballet Theatre presented one of its Lecture Demonstration Performances (LDP) at William Winchester on May 4, 2007. Dr. Vignotti, principal at William Winchester said, “The students in grades K-5 thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding performance of Sorcerer’s Apprentice that the Westminster Ballet Theatre presented. The flow from instruction to performance was seamless and tied into Carroll County Board of Education’s benchmarks beautifully.”
The Sorcerer's Apprentice is "program music" in which the composer uses musical themes to describe a particular event, a narrative idea, or develop a character. Mr. Dukas, the composer, based his symphonic work on a poem written by Goethe, a German poet. Janette Sullivan, Director of the Westminster Ballet Theatre and State of the Arts Dance & Music Center states, “The purpose of our LDP is to reach beyond an “introduction to the arts” process. Through a forum in which the skills of problem solving and creative thinking are encouraged, the LDP encourages a young audience to develop an “I can” attitude through the world of art. The arts inspire and enhance learning, reinforce ideas, expand concepts, and benefit subject areas such as math, science, language, and history.”
The WBT is dedicated to enhancing the quality and status of arts education within the schools as a means of providing children with skills and knowledge they need to achieve their greatest potential. Along with the generous support of the Jim & Patty Rouse Charitable Foundation, we demonstrate our commitment to the education of our community’s children in allotting more young students the opportunity to be involved in an arts education.
