LOCAL DANCER RECEIVES FULL SCHOLARSHIP
Westminster, MD--April 17, 2007-- Becky Dyson, a 17 year-old honor student at Westminster High School, has been awarded a full scholarship from the Linehan Artist Scholars Program at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County (UMBC). Becky currently studies dance at State of the Arts Dance & Music Center and is an apprentice with the Westminster Ballet Theatre. Artistic Director Janette Sullivan states, “Becky is a wonderful and dedicated young dancer. I understand these scholarships are based not only on talent and scholastic achievement, but also on potential. I know she will accomplish great things at UMBC.”
The Linehan Artist Scholars Program is for undergraduates who show the highest artistic and intellectual ability. In a strong liberal arts setting, scholars receive an honors education in their chosen specialty within a community of multidisciplinary artists. Linehan Artist Scholars have opportunities to perform and exhibit in a range of venues, including student productions, with guest artists, and in resident ensembles and companies.
The Linehan Artist Scholars Program is extremely competitive. First, Becky had to apply with a written application to the Scholar Program. She was then chosen to audition live with numerous other dancers. The final round was an interview with two faculty members and a current Linehan Artist Scholar winner. Becky starts this fall at UMBC; she plans to major in dance and minor in business. UMBC’s dance department focuses on modern dance and contemporary methods of work; the curriculum helps students develop strong technique, composition, and performance.
Becky plans to continue her training and teaching at State of the arts Dance & Music Center as well as perform with the Westminster Ballet Theatre while she attends UMBC. Becky states, “In addition to learning classical ballet technique, the Westminster Ballet Theatre and State of the Arts have allowed me to participate in some very cool avant-garde movement which will certainly benefit my future at UMBC and in the rest of my career!” You can see Becky perform at the 3rd Annual Westminster International Dance Festival this July with the Moscow Ballet.
